Neck Pain
Explanation by Dr. Ali Nemati Neck pain is a common issue, especially in people over 50 years, often due to cervical disc herniation. It can also occur in students. • The cervical spine has 7 vertebrae, separated by discs composed mainly of water and cartilage. • Vertebrae are connected by ligaments and muscles. ________________________________________ Pain Location and Symptoms • Pain can range from the back of the neck and base of the skull to the shoulders and scapulae. • May extend to the upper back or arms. • Headache, stiffness, pain, and neck inflammation are common symptoms. ________________________________________ Causes of Neck Pain The most common causes: 1. Spinal osteoarthritis 2. Cervical disc herniation 3. Muscular syndromes 🔹 Pain radiating to the arms requires early medical evaluation. ________________________________________ Neck Muscle Stiffness and Spasm • Caused by improper movements or prolonged strain: o Rapid neck movements during sports o Poor posture while walking or sitting o Sleeping with improper neck alignment o Long hours working at a desk without position changes • Prolonged strain causes overstretching of muscles and ligaments, potentially leading to micro-tears. • Result: swelling, pain, restricted movement, and muscle spasm • Usually improves with a few days of rest. ________________________________________ Neck Pain with Headache and Dizziness • Cervicogenic headache is common, usually due to excessive pressure on the upper cervical joints. • Causes: o Injuries (neck sprain, lifting heavy objects) o Repetitive or prolonged activities (bending, poor posture, computer work, lifting objects) • Treating cervicogenic headaches can also help reduce neck pain.
