DiscoGel: A Minimally Invasive Treatment for Lumbar Disc Herniation
Dr. Ali Nemati, a neurosurgeon, explains that Discogel is a minimally invasive procedure for treating herniated discs. In this procedure, the Discogel is injected into the disc, typically performed in the operating room under local anesthesia, without general anesthesia. Patients are usually discharged a few hours after the procedure. The injection is guided by fluoroscopy. The tungsten in the Discogel allows it to be visible under imaging, enabling precise administration. The final therapeutic effects become apparent a few weeks after the procedure, and patients can return to their daily activities and work. Discogel is most effective for herniated discs where the disc wall is intact and has not yet ruptured. Studies show that minimally invasive disc procedures successfully treat approximately 75–80% of lumbar disc herniation cases. The choice of procedure depends on the type of disc and physician evaluation. Advantages of Discogel injection: • Minimally invasive with very low risk • No open surgery required • No scars and no failed surgery syndrome • Does not affect future treatments or potential surgeries • Can be performed as an outpatient procedure without hospitalization • No prolonged post-procedure physiotherapy required • High success rate: 80–90%
