Vertebroplasty: A Treatment for Spinal Fractures

Vertebroplasty is a modern, minimally invasive procedure used to treat vertebral compression fractures caused by osteoporosis. According to Dr. Ali Nemati, elderly patients with osteoporosis may develop spinal fractures even without major trauma—sometimes during simple daily activities. The main symptom is sudden and persistent back pain. Repeated fractures over time can lead to kyphosis (forward curvature of the spine), resulting in pain, reduced mobility, and decreased quality of life. During vertebroplasty, the physician inserts a thin needle into the fractured vertebra under imaging guidance and injects a special bone cement. This cement hardens within minutes and: • Significantly reduces pain • Restores the strength and stability of the fractured vertebra • Prevents further spinal deformity • Allows the patient to resume daily activities within 24 hours Vertebroplasty is considered a highly effective treatment and does not require open surgery.
